Most dryers have a safety device that cuts power to the heater or motor when temperatures become too high. The dryer may work again after it cools, only to stop during the next load. Clothes may also take much longer to dry, feel hotter than normal, or come out with a musty smell because moisture is not venting properly.

Clean the lint screen before every load and check for visible lint around the screen housing. From outside the home, make sure the vent flap opens when the dryer is running. If it barely moves or you see lint collecting around it, the vent line may need cleaning.

Do not run the dryer with the vent disconnected into a garage, crawlspace, or laundry room. That can create moisture problems and allows lint to collect where it should not. If the vent run is long, runs through walls, or has several turns, professional vent cleaning may be the safer option.

An overloaded or unbalanced load

Large comforters, heavy towels, and bulky bedding can cause a dryer drum to struggle, especially when the load becomes bunched to one side. Some dryers will pause or stop if they detect a problem with drum movement. A worn belt, weak idler pulley, or tired motor can make the issue more noticeable.

Try running a smaller, balanced load. If the dryer completes a normal load but stops with blankets or several pairs of heavy jeans, do not assume the appliance is broken. The load size may be the immediate problem. Still, a dryer in good condition should handle reasonable bulky loads, so repeated stopping may point to a part that is beginning to fail.

A moisture sensor is ending the cycle early

On sensor-dry settings, metal strips inside the drum monitor the moisture in the clothes. If fabric softener residue covers those strips, the dryer may read the load as dry when it is not and end the cycle too soon.

Wipe the sensor bars gently with a soft cloth and a little rubbing alcohol, then try the dryer again. This is most useful when the dryer stops but the clothes are still damp and the dryer does not seem unusually hot. If timed dry runs normally but sensor dry cycles do not, the sensor system or its wiring may need attention.

The door switch is loose or failing

Every dryer has a door switch that tells the machine the door is closed. If that switch is loose, damaged, or not making solid contact, a little vibration can make the dryer think the door has opened. The drum may stop without warning.

Look for an obvious issue with the door: a broken latch, a door that sags, or laundry caught near the seal. Do not tape down or bypass the door switch. It is a safety feature. A technician can test the switch and replace it if necessary.

A failing belt, motor, or pulley

If you hear a thump, squeal, scraping sound, or a humming noise before the dryer stops, the problem may be mechanical. The belt that turns the drum can stretch or break. The idler pulley that keeps tension on the belt can wear down, and a motor can overheat or lose strength as it ages.

A common sign of a motor issue is a dryer that starts normally when cool but stops after several minutes. Once it has rested, it may start again. A failing belt or pulley may let the machine power on while leaving the drum still or causing it to turn inconsistently.

These repairs require opening the dryer cabinet, and the correct diagnosis matters. Several different parts can produce similar symptoms. Replacing a belt when the real issue is a motor or control problem only adds expense without restoring dependable laundry days.

Check These Things Before Scheduling Dryer Repair

Start with the easy, safe steps. Empty the lint screen, check that the dryer is not packed too tightly, and confirm the door closes firmly. Try a timed-dry cycle with a small load. If your dryer is on a sensor setting, clean the moisture sensor bars inside the drum.

Next, check the outside vent while the dryer runs. You should feel a steady flow of warm air and see the vent flap open. Weak airflow, no airflow, or air blowing back into the laundry area can point to a vent restriction.

If your dryer has an error code, write it down exactly as shown. Also note whether the dryer is electric or gas, whether it stops on every setting, and whether it restarts after cooling down. These details can make a service visit quicker and more accurate.

Before inspecting anything beyond the lint screen and visible vent connection, unplug an electric dryer. For a gas dryer, stop using it if you smell gas or notice signs of overheating. A burning smell, smoke, a repeatedly tripped breaker, or a dryer that is extremely hot to the touch calls for immediate attention rather than another test load.

When a Dryer That Keeps Stopping Needs a Technician

A professional diagnosis is worthwhile when cleaning the lint screen and checking the vent does not solve the problem, or when the dryer repeatedly shuts down from heat. Thermal fuses, thermostats, heating elements, motors, control boards, and wiring can all be involved. Those parts should be tested, not guessed at.

It also helps to consider the age and overall condition of the appliance. A dryer with a straightforward belt, switch, or thermostat repair may have plenty of useful life left. But if an older unit needs a costly motor, multiple internal parts, or has a history of repeated repairs, replacement can make better financial sense.
